The Experiences of Gay and Lesbian Salvation Army Officers
This book examines the experiences of queer Salvation Army officers in Australia, revealing a disconnect between the movement’s stated mission of non-discrimination and the reality for queer members. Drawing on surveys and interviews, it explores the impact of conservative theology and strict regulations on relationships, detailing harms such as moral injury, conversion therapy, and workplace discrimination. Despite these challenges, the book highlights the hope for authentic, integrated lives and the valuable lessons queer officers offer the church in diversity, grace, and justice.
“Queer Blood and Fire is an important book. It positively explores the presence and contribution of gay and lesbian Salvation Army officers, and offers a clear theological rationale for inclusion.”
— Glen O’Brien, Professor of Christian Thought and History, University of Divinity, Melbourne, Australia.
